Joker as the Alpha Male's Alpha Male

Spoiler Warning!

One of the most clever things about The Dark Knight – and there are plenty – is the no-nonsense way it sets the scene. Things happen quickly in those first moments. Everything feels urgent. The viewer knows something is going to happen, because things are action-packed from the beginning
.
But if you look very carefully at the Joker’s scenes, you will see he is setting up his own reputation – both in terms of what Gotham’s citizens think of him and in terms of what his viewers think – very carefully. In fact, he is even doing it in the right order.

According to many of the adherents to the seduction community, one of the most important things a man can do if he is planning to make a woman want him is to establish social proof. Women do it too, of course. If a woman walks into a bar and finds that she is competing with a Playboy model, for instance, she will instantly recognize she’s going to have a tough night getting attention, because a Playboy model has more social proof than your average Jo. Women establish social proof in similar, but not identical ways that men do. Being famous helps; performing helps; being outgoing helps – and all these help both genders. But on a more primal level, a woman seeks to be beautiful and a man seeks to be dominant.

He can do this either by demonstrating he has access to resources, i.e., being rich or by demonstrating physical or mental dominance. In the first three scenes of The Dark Knight, the Joker accomplishes all of this.

Let me say, just for the record, that, no matter how efficiently some of us have overcome the urge to be dazzled by Rolexes and brutality, it still works on a primal level. No matter how worthwhile as a human being the guy with the good heart is, that is not what our bodies respond to. Our bodies understand how important resources are. Our bodies still want a tough guy to protect us against dinosaurs and invading tribes. No matter how evolved we are socially, we’re all still cavemen and –women.

Which is why those first three Joker scenes are so breathtaking.

In the very first scene of the movie, we see the Joker at work. Even though this is a special project – not necessarily a money-maker, but one calculated to gain control of the mob – we see the man doing one of the things he does to make a living. He robs a bank in a scene that is reinforced later when we see him with a gigantic pile of money, which he, of course, burns.
The surface reason for this scene to exist is, simply, action. The Joker is the catalyst. He gets things going. And what adventure fan doesn’t like a good heist? However, in a sexual sense, even if we aren’t aware of it at the moment, our radars are working overtime. This is a man with means. He can practically pull money out of thin air.

The next two Joker scenes are all about establishing his dominance among other males. He crashes a meeting of mobsters. Incidentally, the mobsters in question are all alpha males themselves, leaders of their respective gang organizations or crime families, and the Joker waltzes right in and takes control. He grabs their attention and tells them how things are going to be, first by killing the first guy who tries to lay hands on him.

For our purposes, the Joker’s third scene is simply about unfinished business. Gambol, one of the toughest and most aggressive guys at the gangster’s ball, was not happy about the Joker’s move, and put out a hit on him right in front of the man’s face. So the Joker kills him in his next scene, and recruits one of his men by forcing them into a fight to the death.
The three scenes are a package deal, allowing the Joker to establish dominance and position himself as a guy you really don’t want to mess with, while demonstrating his immense mental faculties. The bank heist alone was sheer art, requiring the meticulous planning of a mastermind. It appears that, whomever he’s rooting for, the viewer is meant to be in awe of the Joker. When you throw sexuality into the mix – and sexuality is always in the mix, let me make that perfectly clear – the female viewer is faced with more complex and interesting issues than mere good versus evil.

Now it’s time for another aside. When discussing viewers who find themselves particularly attracted to The Dark Knight’s Joker, I find it better to refer to “she” for three reasons. One, which trumps all others, is that it is simply easier. Two, I have yet to look deeply into the sexual motivations of the gay male. I don’t know if he responds as readily to the same power dynamics that women do, but my intention is certainly not to leave him out. That said, if there are gay males who find themselves responding in similar ways to the Joker, please clue me in, along with your responses to my theories.

And three, I’m just not seeing a lot of male sexual love for the Joker. It seems to be primarily a phenomenon among women and girls. But again, I could be wrong.

Not only does the Joker do all the right things when it comes to setting himself up as a sex symbol, true to his nature, he does them in the right order. Access to resources, alpha male status and intelligence are the foundation which supports everything else he does in The Dark Knight. Because of the movie’s fast pace, they seem to work subliminally, but they do work. By the time the susceptible viewer makes it to Bruce Wayne’s party, she doesn’t stand a chance.

The Joker's Virtual Harem

What the Joker Fangirls Have To Say

Before going into the reasons why the Joker has captured the hearts and loins of ladies everywhere, let’s take a look at what the fangirls have been saying about him in the first place.

No analysis here, folks. This is just straight data.

If you aren’t aware of the Joker’s underground lovefest, just Google “is joker sexy” and see for yourself. Here is some of what you will find.

The first thing that comes up for me is “YouTube – Joker Sexy Eyes.” There is a host of Joker YouTube love out there. Follow this one and you will end up in a labyrinth that is to a fangirl what the La Brea Tar Pits were to the dinosaurs. I almost died there myself.

At thoughts.com there is an interesting tribute called “Joker…Sexy or Psychopathic” involving bondage and kidnapping.

The poll “Who else thinks The Joker is sexy? (message me if you do)” poll created by user franzschubert at Quizilla.com is the sort of thing that started popping up all over the internet within days of The Dark Knight’s July 2008 theater release. Gotta create that “enabling space” as one detractor called it. This particular poll is no longer available.

But this one is. There is a question at Yahoo! Answers that asks, “Anyone else agree that Dark Knight’s Joker is sexy?”

Here is part of what No Trigger had to say in her (I presume) question: “Or am I just crazy? …His appearance is obviously not clean, but MY GOD this picture is so hot: [Pretend there is a photo here.] I couldn’t help but smile every time Joker would appear on the movie screen, because he’s just so interesting to watch. Haha, am I weird or are there other girls (or guys) that find the Joker sexy as well?”

Results of the poll? User Kayla says, “Completely agree. He is probably the sexiest character I have ever seen on screen. I loved how he licked his lips. And that whole scene at the party. when he was like, ‘Hello beautiful…’ Oh man…that was hot. I love that character. And I love Heath :(”

User Lex says, “OMG!!! I LOVE YOU! Finally, someone who agrees with me! I tell all my friends, ‘He’s sooo sexy” and they’re like, ‘Gross!’ The only reason why I saw The Dark Knight was because he was soo sexy and every time they didn’t show him in the movie, I would get mad. And yes, Heath Ledger (may he rest in peace) is a brilliant actor.”

Sdkitten says, “Wow! I really liked him….And I thought I was the only one who felt that way! LOL….As I was sitting and watching the movie I kept getting distracted by him and kept thinking to myself, ‘Wow he’s kinda sexy…’ So you’re not alone! And I agree about the whole personality thing….It was very likeable!”

And it goes on. To be fair, however, not all the respondents agree that the Joker is sexy and some of them fail to make a distinction between actor and character.

Such polls abound. There is one at Facebook that asks, “Is The Joker sexy or is it just me?” And another at Tickle that asks, “Who thinks Heath Ledger’s Joker was sexy?”

There is even plenty of fangirl-created art to go around, which you can see if you take a close look at the image accompanying this post.

Then there is the absolute preponderance of *Jokerotica written by everyone from naïve (and hopefully young) “He could be my boyfriend” types to hardened “I’ll take whatever he dishes out” types. From teens to thirty- and fortysomethings (and probably a few grandmas too), the Joker has a virtual harem that would shock a sheikh.

You’ll have to find that stuff yourself. I’m no snitch. But believe me – it isn’t hard to find.

What the Joker Fangirl Haters Have To Say

And, of course, what would a movement be without a counter-movement? If you care to sit and concentrate for a while, Sean O’Neal at A.V.Club sets forth the spirit of the debate in his article “IMDBates: The Dark Knight.” Dissenters range from the merely confused – as in, why would anyone be attracted to a murderous psychopath with a Batman fetish? – to the downright hostile.

There is another such article at Mad Zen Zoo “Rock Me, ‘Sexy’ Joker (and other Dark Knight Quandaries” that states, “Freaky emo girls, if you want the Joker so badly, then go for it… obviously you deserve him.”

And another: “Twisted Romance: The Doomed Loves of Blinded Fangirls” appears at The Lilac Pilgrim – Yet Another Blog. It was sent to me by a user named Sapphron who has this to say about her place in the whole thing: “I am not exactly a fangirl but I have been infected by a strange obsession with the Joker. I read the fanfiction as a guilty pleasure and can’t seem to get him out of my head.”

Apparently, fangirl hating of all types is quite a popular pastime, judging from the existence of a blog called Save the Fangirls.

I will possibly respond to these “hater” arguments after the Sex and the Joker series, or perhaps as a wrap-up, because the series itself is intended to explain – or at least intelligently explore – the phenomenon, not defend it. It is my hope, however, that the series itself will serve as a response to fangirls and dissenters alike who don’t understand the mental mechanism that powers the movement and who suspect that they or the people around them are losing their minds.

Next series post will discuss the first step of seduction as it applies to the Joker – establishing social proof. Until then, I’ll be in my enabling space.

*Yes, he gets his own subgenre. Don’t hate.

Death of Free Internet Is Imminent

I have decided to include a segment on my blog about Freedom of Speech. It's a highly relevant topic when it comes to erotica, for one thing, because you never know what in what direction obscenity laws will decide to veer. In this case, however, blogs like yours and mine could meet their demise once the corporations get their hands in and start carving up the Internet like cable, limiting your - and your readers' - access to the web depending on what package you are willing to pay for. The Internet will be just another cable outlet.

The following article explains the process that is slated to take place in just a few very short years. Please read it an consider reposting on your own blogs. Alert your readers that the freedom we are enjoying right this moment as we make our daily blog rounds is in serious danger.

Death of Free Internet Is Imminent

In the last 15 years or so, as a society we have had access to more information than ever before in modern history because of the Internet. There are approximately 1 billion Internet users in the world and any one of these users can theoretically communicate in real time with any other on the planet.

The Internet has been the greatest technological achievement of the 20th century by far, and has been recognized as such by the global community. The free transfer of information, uncensored, unlimited and untainted, still seems to be a dream when you think about it. Whatever field that is mentioned — education, commerce, government, news, entertainment, politics and countless other areas — have been radically affected by the introduction of the Internet.

And mostly, it's good news, except when poor judgments are made and people are taken advantage of. Scrutiny and oversight are needed, especially where children are involved. However, when there are potential profits open to a corporation, the needs of society don't count.

13 Questions for Chloe de la Roche

The Maestro's Maker now on sale at Ravenous Romance.

Thursday Thirteen No. 4

Thursday Thirteen character interview time again! Today’s guest is Chloe de la Roche. Though she makes only a modest appearance in The Maestro’s Butterfly, Chloe plays a much larger literary role in prequel The Maestro’s Maker - that of narrator. She speaks about the book, her role in the story and what is so attractive about Claudio du Fresne.

1. What is it about The Maestro’s Maker that will make fans of The Maestro’s Butterfly come back for seconds?

It is the same in spirit. There is plenty of sex, of course, because of Claudio. And if they like him because he is bossy and unrepentant and likes to punish people, they won’t be disappointed in this one.

2. Now, you’re a vampire, not one of Claudio’s feeder-slaves. Do you get punished also?

Everyone who lives under Claudio’s authority can be punished. He will spank me, or whatever, as quickly as he will one of the feeders.

3. How do you feel about that?

It’s Claudio. It’s the way he does things. But there is something sexy about a man who takes charge, no?

4. Though Claudio is practically your husband, The Maestro’s Butterfly isn’t about your relationship. Can you explain for our readers how that works?

It’s simple. It’s the story of how he gets one of our feeders. We are not exactly monogamous. Vampires rarely are.

5. Why is that?

It’s the way the bite works. Feeding is, for us, very tied to our sex drive. Usually, if we feed from someone, we fuck them too. It helps keep them willing. As a result, the most successful vampires tend to be people of a certain type. Those who can adapt to this sort of lifestyle.

6. Did you have trouble with that?

Yes, it was difficult for me at first. It was not my choice to become a vampire. I had a very different life then. But one must adapt, no?

7. Was it Claudio’s choice?

It’s best if people find out from reading The Maestro’s Maker, which, of course, tells the story of how he became a vampire.

8. The Maestro’s Maker is the second book of the Maestro series. What is your role in this one?

In this one, I am narrator. I tell my story, and Claudio’s, and tell of the way we met. I was very young then – eighteen, twenty – something like that. A young girl by today’s standards. But very much a woman then.

9. There is a third, very important, character in The Maestro’s Maker, though, isn’t there?

A third…? Oh, you mean Francois? Yes, he is the…how do you say…the catalyst. He is responsible for much of what happens. He is responsible for Claudio and I meeting.

10. Is he a good man?

No. There are no good men in this book.

11. Not even Claudio?

Claudio is good in his own way, I suppose. He is loyal to his family. He knows how to make things happen. He takes care of us. But he has always known how to get what – or who – he wants. He will take care of you, but he exacts a price. And part of that price is being owned. He will take your body and your soul and make you crave only him. The other price is a spanking, a real one, if you disobey. Or, if he is very displeased, even a whipping. And sometimes, he will do these things for nothing more than his own pleasure. I love him, though. I have since the first time I saw him.

12. What was it you loved about him?

He was such a beautiful, noble-looking man. And I could see his passion in the way he played his violin. That sound, the first time, haunts me even today.

13. I hear there are pirates.

Pirates – yes, unfortunately, there are.

Man With a Plan: A Character Analysis of the Joker

Spoiler Warning!

“Do I look like a guy with a plan? I’m like a dog chasing cars: I wouldn’t know what to do with one if I caught it.”

This is what the Joker tells Gotham District Attorney Harvey Dent in the hospital scene - or, as some fans like to think of it, the “Nurse Joker” scene. These words, along with the Joker’s self-identification as an “agent of chaos,” suggest that he wants people to consider him a completely random force. He is right about being an agent of chaos, but he is anything but random. In order to pull off such elaborate plans, keeping several steps ahead of police officers and masked vigilantes alike, he has to be an extremely detail-oriented planner.

It takes a lot of discipline to appear this chaotic. But that is what a master performer does. The Joker is pulling a Columbo on us all, appearing unbalanced while maintaining control of the situation, keeping his audience focused on the right hand while the left takes advantage of the situation. He is the archetypal Shakespearean fool.

One of the most compelling pieces of evidence of his meticulous nature is what happens when the Joker is finally captured and placed in jail at Gotham’s Major Crimes Unit. Before he even sets foot in the jailhouse, he has managed to smuggle a bomb into the building via the body of another criminal, not to mention having Harvey Dent and his “squeeze” Rachel Dawes rigged up with enough liquid flammables to roast half the town.

The Joker is a study in contradiction, and he as much as smacks the viewer in the head with that fact repeatedly. “The only sensible way to live in this world is without rules,” he tells Batman during the interrogation scene. A man who has no rules won’t necessarily feel compelled to represent himself in a consistent manner. In fact, being inconsistent and unpredictable is a good way to keep people guessing, which gives him the upper hand. The Joker says whatever he has to in a particular situation to get the other person to comply with his wishes.

He is a great liar, which suggests that his stories are actually embellished truths. Take the scar stories, for instance. The Joker’s scars are the result of something known as the “Glasgow smile,” which is a method used by Professional Bad People to torture and kill victims. The Joker’s injuries are likely the result of a professional job that didn’t quite work. When he asks people if they would like to know where he got his scars, he isn’t being completely literal.

The best acting - and hence the best lying - is never actually about pretending to feel a particular thing, but rather a displacement of emotion from a past scenario to fuel the current one. Therefore, the emotion the Joker exhibits when speaking of a fiendish father and a lost love is most likely real. My theory about the scar stories is that, yes, his father probably did butcher his mother right in front of his eyes and a woman did probably leave him once he was firmly on the path toward becoming the Joker. His life is no doubt fraught with betrayal and abandonment. Instead of hiding it, he uses his own human vulnerability, juxtaposed with his monstrous ability to torture and terrify, to keep his victims - and his viewers - off-balance.

So The Dark Knight’s Joker is, after all, a man with a plan. He wants to show the people of Gotham their darker sides, to punish them for their hypocrisy by holding up his own life as a mirror to their souls. The interrogation scene with Batman suggests this desire. “When the chips are down, these people will eat each other,” he says. “I’m not a monster. I’m just ahead of the curve.”

Ironically, he is pointing to himself as a voice of honesty in a dishonest world.

Why does he want to do this? Again, it comes down to displaced emotion. Using his understanding of his own human weaknesses, he is able to use them when he recognizes them in others. Therefore, we can identify the Joker’s issues by listening closely to what he says while he is taunting a potential victim. “Does it depress you, Commissioner, to know just how alone you are?” he asks the newly appointed Commissioner Jim Gordon when Gordon joins him in the interrogation room.

This issue arises again during the fight scene at the old Pruitt Building near the end of the film, when Batman turns this very tactic on the Joker. “You are alone,” Batman says when the ferries fail to explode. Batman is also using his own issues to understand those of his enemy. Both the Batman and the Joker are lone figures, which is perhaps one thing that draws the Joker to him so persistently. Batman’s comment suggests that he believes the Joker is forcing everyone - including Batman - into his games so that he will have a place in society. Even being despised is preferable to being completely and utterly alone.
When telling the Joker, “You are alone,” Batman intends to deliver a blow to the psyche. Unable to hurt the man physically, Batman is trying to hurt him psychologically. However, the Joker appears to be as invulnerable to psychological attack as he is to physical attack.

I am giving a generic character analysis of the Joker because it is important to understand his overall personality and motivations in order to better understand the impact he has had on his female viewers. As a criminal mastermind, the Joker wants to show the people of Gotham that, even though he is the one behind the clown makeup, they are the ones living their lives in masks. He seeks to point up their hypocrisy, and perhaps to punish them for it. Perhaps he is punishing them as well for making him an outcast, even while appearing to embrace this status wholeheartedly. He is angry because he is alone, and he wants to force people to look at what they are trying to bury.
What better next step than to seduce the viewers?

As a fictional villain, he allows us a relatively safe place in which to take out our fears and play with them, learning about ourselves in the process. Many of those fears are those inherent in exploring the dark side of our sexuality. Perhaps this isn’t exactly what was intended by the team that created The Dark Knight, but it is, nevertheless, what has happened.

My next post will present evidence of the Dark Knight Joker’s sexual popularity among women.

Raise a Glass to Bettie Page

Bettie Page: April 22, 1923-Dec. 11, 2008

Let’s take a moment to remember the 1950s pinup model, Bettie Page, who has been credited for helping to pave the way for the 1960s sexual revolution and making stodgy Americans really think about their sexuality a little instead of keeping it shoved in a box in the deep, dark recesses of their minds.

Ms. Page brightened the lives of soldier boys and civilians alike with her playful approach to the camera, and even opened people’s eyes to fetish photography. Of course, it wasn’t her intent to make people feel more free. She just enjoyed being in front of a camera more than she liked slaving over a typewriter all day, and who can blame her?

Yes, my friends. Bettie Page was a…sec-retary.

Page is still an familiar icon to those who run in gothic and fetish circles, a symbol of carefree sexuality, youthful beauty, and even glamour. You won’t see a photograph of Ms. Page in her old age, because she wouldn’t allow them to be taken. She wanted to be frozen in time, forever beautiful.

I am going to end on a wonderful quote taken from an article about Ms. Page’s death Thursday at the age of 85: “God approves of nudity. Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, they were naked as jaybirds."

Good night, sweet princess. May flights of angels wing you to a really great party.

13 Questions for Claudio du Fresne

Thursday Thirteen No. 3

I decided to have my own little interview with a vampire, and ask the “bastard hero” of my book, The Maestro’s Butterfly, a few little things about what it’s like to be him. Claudio is a character I have known for many years. I started writing him nearly a decade ago, and he has been both a pleasure and a pain. But those two things often show up together, don't they?

At this point, I think I may continue to conduct character interviews for my TTs, so if you know any characters who would like to be interviewed, or at least tolerate it, send them my way. And as for getting to know me through TT...pay special attention to the questions I ask, and there you will find your answers...

Or something like that. ;)

1. Tell our readers a little bit about yourself.

There is no need to send this to me in an email, cherie. I can hear your thoughts perfectly. This is like a telephone conversation between character and author, no? I am more than a simple character on a page. I will enter their minds, their dreams. I will be with them in the small hours of the night. It will be very romantic, yes? They will want me like they have wanted no other.

2. I was actually talking about more concrete details. Like where you were born and what you do for a living.

I am a classical musician born in Paris in 1744. I am a Scorpio. Does this help? I had a life as a noble before the French Revolution, but of course, politics often changes even the small lives of men. For the purposes of The Maestro's Butterfly, I am the leader of a chamber quartet called Sanguis Nocturnus. The Latin is sexy and forbidding, no? I am a virtuoso in many things, most notably the violin, the piano and the seduction of women. These things, I am very good at. I would challenge any reader to put that theory to the test. Come into my world and see if you can resist my charms.

3. How are you different from other vampires? I'm speaking of the vampires you see in other fictions like the Ricean works and most recently the television show True Blood.

I think perhaps you are speaking of biology. I remember my biology excited you a great deal when we were working together during late nights. Yes, we do not kill for food. Evolution has led us on a different path than the other vampires. We take very little blood, compared to vampires in other fictions. Perhaps a pint from one person, perhaps slightly more. We are very efficient. The bite and the sex between a vampire and his "feeder," as the community at large calls them, keeps the food source close to the vampire. Of course, there are, how do you say...fringe benefits...for the feeder. When you belong to a vampire, the aging process is slowed. I have a woman who is in her sixties, I believe, who looks like a thirty-five year old. It helps them heal their injuries quickly. And vampire sex is better than any sex you will ever experience, especially if I am the vampire.

4. You say the community calls them "feeders." What do you call them?

They are my pets, cherie. You know this.

5. Ravenous Romance, where The Maestro's Butterfly is being sold, is marketing you under Wicked Pleasures, which is the kinky section. Care to comment on that?

What can I say? I am French. The best pleasures in life are the wicked ones, my dear. Perhaps you have forgotten my talents. But it is no matter. I enjoy this feeling of power over a woman in my arms, to feel her tremble against me because she knows I will do everything I want. I will bring out her darkest desires and make her submit to them, and to me. I will put her over my knee and deliver a spanking she will not soon forget. Perhaps because she has displeased me, perhaps for my own pleasure. I enjoy this very much. If I am very displeased, I may be harsher still. This knowledge, that they may be punished ╨ truly punished, it is not a game with me when it comes to this ╨ it excites them on a very deep level. It lets them know I am not a man to be trifled with. To some, this is the strongest aphrodisiac.

6. Which leads me to my next question. In the book, we see you start a relationship with a potential new feeder, Miranda O'Connell. How did you know she was right for that kind of life? I'm sure being essentially owned by a vampire and subject to whatever crosses his (or her) mind isn't for everyone.

No, of course not. It is the first rule of seduction, to choose your target with care. Choose someone who wants to be taken. They are all different, of course. In Miranda's case, I became interested in her musically and decided to test her to see if she would perhaps like to be guided by someone like me. There are ways to discover if someone would make a good slave for vampires. Give them little commands to see their reactions. Admonish them for a mistake one moment and praise them the next. Mention punishment games in passing to see their response. By the time I have her in my car, which is on Page 1 of The Maestro's Butterfly, her fate was sealed. I knew exactly what kind of woman she was, that she would be a perfect addition to my family. Of course, for her, there was still the internal struggle.

7. Will you tell our readers about your family?

But of course. My musicians and I live and work together at my estate in the South, with several of my pets. I like to keep at least two feeders per vampire at the estate. At the time of The Maestro's Butterfly, there is my cellist, the beautiful Chloe de la Roche, whom I have known a very long time. We have never married, but if I would marry at this time in my life, she would be the one. She is the wife of my soul, my mate, my confidante. The second violinist is Adam Washington, who was in his twenties when I was in New Orleans in the 1940s. At that time, it was very difficult to be a black musician in the American South. I did not like to see such a brilliant musician like this, and I knew we would work well together. He accepted my offer to be a vampire. Unfortunately, we have always had disagreements about the necessity for vampires to keep slaves. But Adam is a strong, masterful man, and I have great respect for him. Seth, who prefers to have no last name, is younger still. In The Maestro's Butterfly he is perhaps in his thirties. I found him downtown in a terrible rock band. I liked how his fingers moved on the guitar and decided to make him a vampire and teach him viola instead. He was not happy when his tattoos disappeared. And today? He still thinks he is a rock star.

8. What about Miranda?

In The Maestro's Butterfly, Miranda is unsure of her own dark desires. She fights them, but it is no use. The desire wins, or the person must spend her life in a constant battle. She is never free until she gives in to temptation. It is my job to guide them in this acceptance. In the beginning, there may be tears and anger. In the end, perhaps, peace.

9. Your brother Victoire also has a role to play in The Maestro's Butterfly. Can you tell everyone a little about him?

Yes, my younger brother, Victoire du Fresne, who has decided long ago no longer to be French. He calls himself Jack, and has lost his beautiful French way of speaking and now sounds like an American. Forgive me. I have loved your country for a very long time, but I will always be French in my very soul. But Victoire is different from me, even though we are the same in many ways. He is also a performer. A magician, playwright, singer, actor. He has done everything. It is perhaps my fault. Many years ago, we were magicians together and there was a splitting of ways. I like to have a home, but he is a vagabond.

10. How are you and Victoire similar ╨ besides that...um...strong du Fresne nose? ;)

Yes, the nose. The large nose may be a sign of many other large things. I think you will find mine is slightly larger. I am, of course, the more handsome, but he is not far behind. The women seem to enjoy him. If you have read the book, then you understand how we are similar. It would be easier to talk about the ways we are different, which they will see in the next book.

11. You're very close to him, aren't you, aside from certain disagreements?

My family is very important to me. I do not abandon them, even when they behave ridiculously.

12. What about traditional vampire things like sleeping in coffins and staying out of sunlight?

It is complete nonsense. We may go in the sun as often as we like. More often than regular humans because we heal from sunburn more quickly. We sleep in beds, like everyone else, although I prefer a windowless bedroom. But it is merely my preference. If you buy The Maestro's Butterfly, you will see it for yourself. And perhaps you will enjoy to stay, yes?

13. Do you miss being human?

We vampires are as human as anyone else. Though our bodies change, we are still living, breathing human beings, with the same questions and desires, the same longings as anyone else. There is always something to be missed from the lives we leave behind. But we must embrace this time, now, and enjoy this chapter of our lives. There are always lovers to be kissed, no?

Thank you, Claudio, for a wonderful interview. Now, go! Charm our readers!

Interviewed by The Future and You, and Metro Spirit

Exciting news! I've been interviewed by the host of a major podcast, The Future and You, which plays for a pretty hefty international audience. It is hosted by science fiction writer Stephen Euin Cobb, who was Johnny on the spot with some very insightful questions about the future of sexuality, as well as power dynamics in sexual relationships. It airs on Wednesdays. I believe mine will air on Dec. 17, but it is possible it may air tonight. At any rate, if you miss it, I think you can listen to a recording. Visit the website for time and other details. Thanks Steve!

At this very moment, however, I am looking at an article about me in Metro Spirit, which is weird because it's a paper where I spent more than half of my career as a journalist. The last three years or so, I covered the arts, no less. And now, there I am on Page 28, yammering on about dominance and submission like it was no little thang.

Thanks to Tom Grant for the words and the image, and Bob Lee - who gave me the Dracula book I have in my library - for his input in the imaging process. And to whomever else had a hand in it as well. The article is called "Vampires in Hephzibah," a headline which appears just below a very hungry-looking photo of yours truly. But I assure you all, I am still a vegetarian and have not switched to any sort of liquid diet. I have to admit, though, it does look like a pic of someone who would write about vampires. Move over Anne Rice!

As much of a thrill as it is to see my mug and quotes, I have to admit that seeing Claudio's name in print (and yours too, Miranda) is what really got my heart all a-flutter. Check it out when you get the chance. It hit the stands today. The paper has a very nicely done beer cover this week, though, so I don't expect them to hang around long. Get yours while you can.

And one more thing...stop back by tomorrow for an interview with the vampire himself, le Maestro Claudio du Fresne.

Sex and the Joker: Batman's Nemesis as Underground Sex Symbol

With The Dark Knight DVD release happening today, I thought it would be a good time to begin re-publishing this article series. My apologies if you've already read it at the other blog, but these pieces contain a lot of how I view the darker side of sexuality. And if you haven't seen them, please...enjoy!

Sex and the Joker: Batman’s Nemesis as Underground Sex Symbol will be a series of articles published on this blog about the startling effect Heath Ledger’s unique portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight movie has had on female fans of the Batman franchise. One interesting thing about this unexpected phenomenon is that it seems to have nothing to do with the relative attractiveness of the actor. Rather, it’s the Joker himself women want - in spite of the extreme facial scars, clown makeup, permanent bad hair day and bizarre fashion sense.

That is because this Joker’s got game. He’s confident. He doesn’t try to hide his looks - he flaunts them. He’s primal, demonstrating repeatedly his ability to seize command of a room, even a room of hardened mob and gang leaders. He is an alpha dog among alpha dogs, a conquering force. He’s aggressive and in-your-face, while being supremely sensual, expressive and playful. This Joker is both exquisitely frightening and plenty of fun.

Within days of The Dark Knight’s onscreen premiere, legions of female fans - now known as “Joker fangirls” - began making online confessions to each other about their desire for the villain.
These girls and women soon found that there were others who shared their conviction that the latest incarnation of the Batman comics’ most popular villain is sexy. Lots of others.

“Jokerotica” began to flood fanfiction sites - and yes, it is exactly what it sounds like. A full-fledged subgenre of erotic fanfiction dedicated to the Joker of The Dark Knight has taken root in the fanfiction community, and it runs the gamut from the innocent, and perhaps naïve, to the truly bizarre.

Fans write about a possible romance between the Joker and Rachel Dawes, who is the girlfriend of Gotham City’s District Attorney Harvey Dent, but they also use their stories to speculate about what it would be like to be kidnapped by the Joker. Some seem attracted by the possibility of finding a vulnerable side to the villain, and perhaps learning once and for all where those scars did come from, while others are hell-bent on submitting to his darkest desires.

But what movement would be complete without a counter movement? Others who don’t share the fangirls’ opinions, and who can’t understand the Joker fangirl phenomenon, began asking questions, offering criticisms and writing their own stories. Some of the reactions can be seen as hostile, which can lead one to speculate about all sorts of things I won’t go into in this introduction. I’m going to take a look at their objections and try to determine why they have such strong feelings about the Joker’s popularity with women.

Here is an overview of what the series will cover: First, we will take a look at the Joker’s overall personality and character structure - his apparent motives, his madness (or lack thereof) - in short, who or what he is. Then, we will take a look at how he establishes himself as a man of resource and status, his intense presence and what a powerful tool it is, his sensuality, why he is a perfect poster-boy for two of the most popular female sexual fantasies, the role of his expressions and body language, his bad-boy status, the possibility of vulnerability and the Joker’s downright funloving nature - even if his idea of fun is a bit frightening.

This is the first post of my article series: Sex and the Joker: Batman's Nemesis as Underground Sex Symbol. Read the next post in the series.

Sexy Joker Fan Videos

Yes, you heard me. The Joker. Batman’s nemesis. And the new one at that. There’s just something about green squiggly curls, a few well-placed facial scars and a penchant for knife play that can make a girl go up in flames.

Or maybe it’s just me.

By request, I am posting the links to a few of my favorite Joker fan videos. Join me on the dark side. We have a lot more than cookies. ;) We have dynamite.

Oh, and sorry for the lack of actual linkage. Blogger has decided against allowing it today, so we must make do with duct tape.

Unhealthy Obsession trailer -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMPWisXMpkU&feature=related -- This was made for a piece of fanfiction called, as you may have guessed, Unhealthy Obsession. I am not at all fond of the Joker/Rachel pairing, at least the way I’ve seen it presented, but this video is pretty brilliant. It’s almost porn, based on the way scenes are cut alone. It’s by CopiPan, who has done more than one awesome video.

The Joker Is On My Radar -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ieDk2qCBLw -- Like this one. There is a risk in watching it, though. It could turn you into a Brittney fan. But listen to the words, and you’ll see how appropriate they are. Unfortunate-lee, you’ll have to scrape the song off the inside of your skull with a pocket knife afterward, but it’s worth it.

Crawling in My Skin -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psPmz3yR2Sk&feature=related -- Sometimes the songs are just really poignant, and I think this is one of those.

That scene -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkY8v046n28&feature=related -- I think this may be the most erotic thing I’ve ever seen, hands down, everybody else out of the running. It’s not exactly a fan video, but if you’re one of the Joker’s girls, be honest…how many times have you YouTubed this?

The Joker Is Scandalous! -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5v0USVVtJI0&feature=related -- I wish CopiPan’s taste in music was closer to my own, because she’s got skilz.

The Dark Bailout -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1X6RQLZtoA&feature=related -- This one is just funny.Politics aside, it’s still hot if the Joker is making an appearance.

Joker vs. Joker: When Clowns Collide -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipBYB5rCXYg&NR=1 -- Another funny one. I just found it. Wonderfully cut. It has that primal “two guys fighting” thing going on.

Don't Stop -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlLeo9Ldl0M -- Oooh, this is a good one. It’s totally a rhythm thang, as many things are. I wish it were longer, but we can’t have everything, now can we?

Joker for President -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDrTuDrPABk -- I would be remiss if I didn’t plug a friend here. Believe it or not, this is not Heath Ledger. He’s actually one of my MySpace friends. This is the best Joker impression I’ve ever seen, hands down. And yes, it’s way sexy. Don’cha just want to lose your fingers in those curls?

There are plenty more, of course, but collecting them would take the rest of my life. The Joker has been hard at work rounding up creative people to do his bidding. Oh, and if you are into the Joker, I have an article series that I will be posting here soon called Sex and the Joker: Batman’s Nemesis as Underground Sex Symbol, in which I take a look at the Joker fangirl phenomenon. So…wait for it…

Miranda O’Connell has just made a dangerous bet with her mysterious music teacher that will change her life forever – that she can stay at his estate for 30 days and still walk away.
